Kashipur (Hindi: काशीपुर) is a city and a municipal board in Udham Singh Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

Kashipur was known as Govishan or Govisana, during the time of Harsha (606–647 AD), when Xuanzang (631–641 AD) visited this region. The ruins of the large settlement of those days are still to be seen near the city.[1] Kashipur was named after Kashinath Adhikari, the founder of the township and Governor of the pargana, one of the officers of the Chand Kings of Kumaon in the 16-17 century.[2]
Poet Gumani Pant has written a poem[3] on this town. Girital and Drona Sagar are well known spots and are associated with the story of the Pandavas. The Chaiti Mela[4] is the best known fair of Kashipur. Today Kashipur is an important industrial township. In autumn, after monsoon, one can see the snowclad peaks of Trishul and its surroundings.
Kashipur is located at .[5] It has an average elevation of 218 metres (715 feet).
The nearest airport is 72 km away at Pantnagar.[6] Kashipur is connected to Ramnagar, Kathgodam, Moradabad, Bareilly, Lucknow and Delhi by rail network. Kashipur is connected by road with all the major cities of the state and region. It is located at national highway NH-74. Delhi is about 225 km away and Haridwar is about 176 km away from Kashipur.
As of the 2001 India census,[7] Kashipur had a population of 92,978. Males constituted 53% of the population and females 47%. Kashipur has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 62%. In Kashipur, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age. Languages spoken are Hindi Punjabi, and English.
Drona Sagar is believed to be associated with Guru Dronacharya, teacher of the Pandavas and the Kauravas in the epic Mahabharata. Many believe that the Drona Sagar was created by the Pandavas as a Guru Dakshina (fee) for Dronacharya. The Skanda Purana states that the water of Drona Sagar is as holy as that of the Ganges.
At present a huge pond with lotus flowers is situated here. The pond is surrounded by temples of various deities. Earlier, there were 32 temples around the periphery of this pond. The excavated site at Drona Sagar is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.[8]
This temple is situated around 10 kilometers away from Kashipur Station next to Kundeshari.

Bal Sundari Mandir also known as Chaiti Mandir, is the most famous temple in Kashipur. During Navratras in March a grand fair is held here every year. The fair draws thousands of pilgrims and devotees from far-flung areas.[4] Devotees throng the temple to offer their prayers to the revered Goddess.
Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib is located in the city of Kashipur, in Mohalla Pakka Kot, near Nagnath Mandir
Central Government recently announced several benefits. With a government eager to promote trade and industry by providing extensive benefits and incentives, Kashipur has become the new industrial hub in India. With Kashipur fast becoming a thriving industrial center, the city is ideally suited for Industrial Park projects with cost of living compared to metros. Large industrial houses such as HCL, Videocon and several paper and sugar mills already have a presence in the district.
Kashipur is fast growing city in Uttarakhand where industries have sprung up at a great pace. The city is in developing stage in terms of education. ITI Kashipur is regarded one of the best ITIs in Uttarakhand and provides only Diploma Courses. Government Polytechnic Kahsipur is providing great engineers for the country. It is the biggest and oldest polytechnic in Uttarakhand.
The Indian Institute of Management is setting up a new campus in Kashipur which will give this city & it's citizens a new direction in the field of education. IIM Kashipur[10] to be operational from 2011, Approximately 200 Acres of Land in the Escorts Farm area of Kashipur, Uttarakhand have been allocated by the Government of Uttarakhand for the Institute.
